The primary focus is serving municipal customers, including cities, towns, villages, counties, and special districts. As for my own professional career, I doubt that I would have ended up in the position of First Deputy Attorney General if I hadn't first worked in another position in the state government. In addition to the Mayor's Office, there are other opportunities for local government attorneys that are often not well known. The Attorney General is both the legal advisor to the branches and agencies of the state government and the legal representative of the public interest in that state. I don't think there are significant challenges or frustrations inherent in working for local government for summer interns, but for full-time employees, relatively low compensation can be a cause for real concern. Above all, it's clear that local government law is for those who are committed to making and carrying them out.
These attorneys conduct complex civil litigation, both defensive and affirmative, in state and federal courts to promote state government policies. From a personal standpoint, opportunities for professional growth and intellectual stimulation are two very good reasons to work in a local government law office. Second, San Francisco's elected municipal prosecutors—Louise Renne from 1986 to 2001 and Dennis Herrera since 2002—have been national leaders in expanding the role of a local government legal office, to fulfill not only the traditional role of defense and advice, but also to use their powers to bring litigation on behalf of voter interests and the public interest in general. I sought this job because I had a strong interest in local government, driven by my local government law class at HLS, and because I was looking for a job that would provide me with a variety of practical practice opportunities cool.
