To answer the first question, public defenders only win about 15% of the time, but that's only because the prosecution will file any case they file. Yes, public defenders are effective because they bring the same passion and dedication to the cases they handle as many other attorneys do. They are also well trained in their craft and know that their work is essential to preserve justice in our legal system. In many cases, public defenders are just as good at their job as private attorneys at representing their clients in court. This can make those who need to trust public defenders feel that they are not getting the best possible defense, even though they are being defended by a professional with the same training as a private defense attorney.
